I think it is great to have these sessions, but I am disappointed that is it pre-conference sessions. Those of us who have children at home have to make difficult decisions anyway when we come to conference, and trying to decide to come early or not adds to that dilemma. Why can't these sessions be offered as a series of workshops during the normal conferenc time? You are adding an extra burden of cost and time to already stressed and stretch IOT. If you don't have children of your own, this is very difficult for you to understand or consider, but please do so in the future.
Dear Anonymous,
We are sorry that the presession does not work for you. When we have offered the kind of program we are presenting as workshops in the general conference, we get complaints because people feel it keeps them from being able to attend other sessions of interest. Obviously, there is no approach that will suit everybody. We have found from experience that a preconference is the best way for most.
Also, we are not unaware of the child-care dilemma (actually, some of us do have children), but we do not have control over that aspect of the conference. You need to mention that issue to the conference organizers on the conference evaluation sheet.
